Reserves Calculation
Reserves Calculation is a professional service aimed at determining the quantity, quality, and economic viability of mineral resources within a deposit. The calculation is based on geological data, technical parameters, market conditions, and regulatory requirements, and serves as the foundation for decision-making in exploration, mining, and investment planning.
Reserves calculation integrates geological interpretation with economic analysis to assess whether mineral extraction is technically feasible and economically justified. The process includes evaluation of reserve volumes, mineral quality, spatial distribution within the subsoil, as well as extraction, processing, and transportation costs.
This service is a key element of mining project planning and is used to support feasibility studies, investment assessments, and applications for special permits.
Reserves Calculation for mineral deposits is performed at different stages of subsoil exploration, from early prospecting to fully explored deposits prepared for industrial development. Depending on the level of geological knowledge and data reliability, the scope and accuracy of calculations vary.
In modern economic conditions, recalculation of reserves is often required due to changes in market prices, mining technologies, production costs, cutoff grades, or regulatory requirements. Re-evaluation also allows identification of unprofitable or non-marketable reserves and optimization of resource utilization.
To ensure reliability, reserves calculation must account for geological uncertainty, technical constraints, and economic risks, and should be updated as new data become available.
Depending on the stage of geological exploration, reserves calculation may be performed at the following levels:
Detailed Reserves Calculation (GEE‑1) involves comprehensive analysis of geological, technical, and economic factors affecting mineral extraction. It includes:- Geological characterization of the deposit – structure, morphology, thickness, overburden, and mineralization features.
- Reserve estimation – calculation of reserve volumes, grades, and spatial distribution.
- Technical parameters – mining methods, processing schemes, and transport conditions.
- Economic assessment – capital and operating costs, profitability, and project efficiency.
- Risk analysis – geological, technical, market, and price-related risks.
Preliminary Reserves Calculation (GEE‑2) is conducted at early exploration stages and is based on limited geological and geochemical data. It provides an initial estimate of resource potential and supports decisions on further exploration investments.
Initial Reserves Calculation (GEE‑3) represents a screening-level assessment of a prospective area. It relies on surface observations, available geological information, and geophysical surveys to identify the possible presence of mineral resources and assess exploration potential.
In strict compliance with the Regulation on the Procedure for State Examination and Evaluation of Mineral Reserves, reserves calculation reports are subject to mandatory state expertise by the State Commission on Mineral Resources of Ukraine.
Depending on the degree of geological exploration and industrial significance, the expertise may result in:
- approval of reserves prepared for further geological exploration,
- approval of reserves of explored deposits intended for industrial extraction.
Validated reserves calculation is a prerequisite for obtaining a special permit for mineral extraction and ensures long-term, economically sound, and environmentally responsible mining operations.
Reserves Calculation acts as a practical link between geologists, subsoil users, and investors. A well-prepared calculation provides a solid basis for business planning, allowing investors to assess required capital, project profitability, and operational lifespan.
