Thermal Water Potential Assessment
The presence of thermal waters in a particular region is determined by the geological structure of the territory and deep processes within the Earth’s subsurface, including active volcanism, tectonic activity, and geodynamic processes that may have contributed to the formation of a high-temperature thermal field. In addition to elevated subsurface temperatures, an essential condition for the formation of thermal water accumulations is the presence of reservoir rocks capable of retaining fluids and preventing their uncontrolled migration.
The most promising regions in Ukraine in terms of thermal water potential include Zakarpattia, Lviv region, Odesa region, Kherson region, as well as Poltava and Kharkiv regions. Within these areas, a significant number of studies were conducted during the Soviet period and after independence by various organizations. However, in most cases, these enterprises were searching not for thermal waters but for oil and gas. Exploration activities included areal seismic surveys and drilling of shallow and deep wells. During drilling operations, temperature measurements were carried out using downhole thermometers. Rock and groundwater samples were also collected for various laboratory analyses.
In many oil and gas wells, geologists encountered high-temperature thermal waters, for example +60°C, +80°C, or even +100°C. However, such wells were abandoned because they had been drilled for the exploration of other mineral resources.
All geological investigations carried out at previous stages, combined with modern geological interpretation, allow for highly accurate forecasting. In the report based on the “assessment of site prospects for the presence of thermal waters,” we provide estimated temperatures, expected productivity of projected wells, forecasts of groundwater quality, chemical composition and physical properties, as well as the depth of various aquifers containing thermal waters. Accordingly, you will be able to assess whether thermal waters are present within your site and estimate their approximate volume. We will also assist in calculating the cost of drilling a well based on the depth of the thermal water horizons and, consequently, determine the overall investment required for the project.
