Ther­mal Water Poten­tial Assess­ment

The pres­ence of ther­mal waters in a par­tic­u­lar region is deter­mined by the geo­log­i­cal struc­ture of the ter­ri­to­ry and deep process­es with­in the Earth­’s sub­sur­face, includ­ing active vol­can­ism, tec­ton­ic activ­i­ty, and geo­dy­nam­ic process­es that may have con­tributed to the for­ma­tion of a high-tem­per­a­ture ther­mal field. In addi­tion to ele­vat­ed sub­sur­face tem­per­a­tures, an essen­tial con­di­tion for the for­ma­tion of ther­mal water accu­mu­la­tions is the pres­ence of reser­voir rocks capa­ble of retain­ing flu­ids and pre­vent­ing their uncon­trolled migra­tion.

The most promis­ing regions in Ukraine in terms of ther­mal water poten­tial include Zakarpat­tia, Lviv region, Ode­sa region, Kher­son region, as well as Polta­va and Kharkiv regions. With­in these areas, a sig­nif­i­cant num­ber of stud­ies were con­duct­ed dur­ing the Sovi­et peri­od and after inde­pen­dence by var­i­ous orga­ni­za­tions. How­ev­er, in most cas­es, these enter­pris­es were search­ing not for ther­mal waters but for oil and gas. Explo­ration activ­i­ties includ­ed are­al seis­mic sur­veys and drilling of shal­low and deep wells. Dur­ing drilling oper­a­tions, tem­per­a­ture mea­sure­ments were car­ried out using down­hole ther­mome­ters. Rock and ground­wa­ter sam­ples were also col­lect­ed for var­i­ous lab­o­ra­to­ry analy­ses.

In many oil and gas wells, geol­o­gists encoun­tered high-tem­per­a­ture ther­mal waters, for exam­ple +60°C, +80°C, or even +100°C. How­ev­er, such wells were aban­doned because they had been drilled for the explo­ration of oth­er min­er­al resources.

All geo­log­i­cal inves­ti­ga­tions car­ried out at pre­vi­ous stages, com­bined with mod­ern geo­log­i­cal inter­pre­ta­tion, allow for high­ly accu­rate fore­cast­ing. In the report based on the “assess­ment of site prospects for the pres­ence of ther­mal waters,” we pro­vide esti­mat­ed tem­per­a­tures, expect­ed pro­duc­tiv­i­ty of pro­ject­ed wells, fore­casts of ground­wa­ter qual­i­ty, chem­i­cal com­po­si­tion and phys­i­cal prop­er­ties, as well as the depth of var­i­ous aquifers con­tain­ing ther­mal waters. Accord­ing­ly, you will be able to assess whether ther­mal waters are present with­in your site and esti­mate their approx­i­mate vol­ume. We will also assist in cal­cu­lat­ing the cost of drilling a well based on the depth of the ther­mal water hori­zons and, con­se­quent­ly, deter­mine the over­all invest­ment required for the project.
