Well construction supervision
The construction of a deep well is a process that is too expensive, complex, and responsible to leave entirely to the contractor. The user of subsoil resources, if they do not have a relevant education, specialized knowledge, and skills, cannot independently assess the quality of well construction. Drilling process requires control over the abidance by the Well Drilling Project and the geologic and technical design plan of drilling, including the design of casing columns and the selection of appropriate steel grades.
It is important to control the quality of casing (cementing) of casing columns, the use of appropriate cement grades, and the quality and proportions of the components used in making the cement slurry. Equally important is the correct selection of drill bits for optimal penetration of a certain type of geological formation. Perhaps the most important aspect to control during well drilling is the correct recipe and selection of drilling fluids with appropriate parameters (density, viscosity, filtration rate, static shear stress, stability, hydrogen content, daily waste).
Incorrect selection of drilling fluid recipes can lead to a critical situation in the well (including lost circulation, gas kicks, cave-ins and washouts, absorption of drilling fluid, etc.). Lack of proper control over the drilling process often leads to situations where the well reaches the projected depth and is constructed according to the technical task, but there is no fluid influx (i.e. thermal water, oil, or gas, for which the well was drilled to obtain). The reason may not be geological at all (although geological reasons also often arise), but purely technical — incorrect selection of drilling fluid recipes.
To prevent the situations described above and achieve the set results with maximum efficiency, companies that order deep well drilling services involve a supervisor (usually one or two) to monitor the progress of well drilling work. The supervisor also controls the consumption of fuel and lubricants, records unproductive time of the drilling crew, detects violations of drilling technology by the drilling company-contractor, and records violations of occupational safety and equipment rules by the well drilling performers.
The Institute of Geology will offer you the most optimal candidate to serve as a drilling supervisor at the drilling site of your well, based on the region where your well project is located, which drilling rig the contractor is using, and within which geological unit (tectonic zone) your object is situated.
